How to keep flowers fresh and long lasting...

Fresh flowers bring beauty and fragrance to any space, but keeping them vibrant and long-lasting requires a bit of care and attention. Whether you've just received a stunning bouquet from Jihaans Flower Emporium or arranged your own selection, these simple tips will help extend the life of your blooms and keep them looking their best.

Start with a Clean Vase

Before placing your flowers in water, ensure your vase is thoroughly cleaned. Bacteria and residue from previous arrangements can shorten the lifespan of fresh flowers. Rinse the vase with warm water and a mild detergent, then rinse again with clean water. A clean environment is the foundation for longer-lasting blooms.

Trim the Stems Properly

Cut about 1-2 centimetres off the bottom of each stem at a 45-degree angle using a sharp knife or floral scissors. This angled cut increases the surface area for water absorption and prevents the stems from sitting flat against the vase bottom, which can block water uptake. Trim the stems every few days to maintain this fresh cut.

Use Fresh, Cool Water

Fill your vase with room-temperature or cool water. Change the water every two to three days, or whenever it becomes cloudy. Fresh water prevents bacterial growth and ensures your flowers can absorb the hydration they need. If your water becomes discoloured quickly, it's a sign that bacteria is present—change it more frequently.

Remove Lower Leaves

Strip away any leaves that would sit below the waterline. Submerged foliage promotes bacterial growth and can cause the water to deteriorate faster. Keep only the upper leaves and blooms above the water surface for optimal freshness.

Add Flower Food

Most quality bouquets come with a packet of flower food. If yours did, dissolve it in the water according to the instructions. Flower food contains nutrients and antibacterial agents that nourish your blooms and keep the water clean. If you don't have flower food, a small amount of sugar and a few drops of bleach can serve as a makeshift alternative.

Keep Flowers Cool and Away from Direct Sunlight

Place your arrangement in a cool location away from direct sunlight, heating vents, and ripening fruit. Heat accelerates the blooming process and wilting. A cool spot—ideally between 15-20°C—will significantly extend the life of your flowers. Avoid placing them near appliances or in warm rooms.

Mist Your Blooms

Lightly mist the petals with water using a spray bottle, especially if the air in your home is dry. This helps flowers stay hydrated and maintains their vibrant appearance. Mist in the morning or evening to avoid water spots in direct sunlight.
